The Ultimate Cheat Sheet on Advertising in Newspapers

In real estate, the saying is: location, location, location. The same thing can be said about advertising in a newspaper. The location of your advertisement makes a difference. You are probably assuming that I am speaking about the placement of the advertisement within the newspaper, but also keep in mind that even “which” newspaper you are advertising in matters. Not all newspapers are equal for your advertising campaigns.

When you do any type of advertising, knowing your intended target  is extremely important. This means that you need to advertise in places where they are going to stumble across your content. This is the location that I am speaking about. You need to advertise in the correct newspaper for your advertisement to be effective at all.

It is kind of obvious that when you place an advertisement in a newspaper, you will want people to read it. Even if you advertise in a newspaper that is well-read by your intended market audience, people may still skip over your advertisement due to poor placement. Even if the advert is in a placed that is clearly visible, you will need to do something to hook people into reading your entire advertisement. In order to achieve this, you will need to follow a few rules:

Have an interesting headline

If you have a headline that attracts attention, it is more likely that the readers will read what you put in the copy. The headline is like a quick one-line hook to grab your customers and audience and draw them into your proposition.

Fulfill your headline promise

Have you ever clicked on a link-bait headline where you thought you were about to read something else, but when the article opened, the content turned out to be completely different, maybe even less useful then you had assumed? How did that feel? Frustrated? Annoyed? The same applies to print advertisements or paid articles in print. Never fool customers with sensational headings.

Inside your advertisement, there are a few things that you should consider if you don’t want to lose the audience’s trust before they get to the end of the ad. Make sure you fulfill your headline promise by giving readers the exact information that your audience is promising. Also, you do not want to fill your advert with a bunch of jargon and wasted words that do nothing to help bring people to trust you.

Maximize your impact

While price is not going to be a central theme in this blog post, you will want to make sure that the advertisement that you place is working to your advantage. Monitor how well each of your newspaper advertisements are working. You can do this in several ways. You can use QR codes that they can scan and open a different page on your website - allowing you to track how people are finding you.

Look at past performance

You will be better positioned once you get the analytical information from the different sites and numbers. Once you do this, you can start to gauge which of your advertisements works better - and do more of what works. Of course, you will want to make slight modifications every so often based on what you see is working with people and what they want more of!

In order to get readers, customers and traffic for your business online, you do not have to have run your advertisement every day, Be shrewd and frugal especially if you have limited funds.
